In a strategic move to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure food security, the Kano State Government has launched an initiative to distribute free fertilizers worth over N1 billion to smallholder farmers, including women and people with disabilities. Each beneficiary will receive 25kg of NPK fertilizer, aimed at supporting their farming activities, boosting crop yields, and improving livelihoods.
Governor Abba Yusuf, during the fertilizer distribution ceremony, highlighted that this initiative is a fulfillment of his campaign promise to uplift the agricultural sector and enhance the livelihoods of Kano residents. This promise was detailed in his 70-page blueprint, “My Commitment for Kano,” which he presented during his campaign for the 2023 elections.
The distribution, which benefits 52,800 smallholder farmers across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas, features fertilizers produced by the State-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO). Governor Yusuf emphasized that the initiative is designed to lower production costs and bolster food security in the state.

In addition to this distribution, the State Executive Council has approved the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilizers, which will soon be available to Kano farmers at subsidized rates. Governor Yusuf expressed hope that this support will encourage farmers, who are currently facing high input and labor costs, to increase their productivity and enhance the state’s agricultural output.
