Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening trade relations with Nigeria, following its participation in the recent Lagos International Trade Fair. Tokashi Oku, Managing Director and Trade Commissioner for the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), expressed optimism for deeper collaboration between the two nations in upcoming trade events, despite a lower-than-anticipated turnout this year.
Speaking at the fair’s closing ceremony, Oku acknowledged the economic challenges Nigeria faces, which impacted attendance. “We understand this year was economically challenging, which affected participation numbers. However, we anticipate economic recovery and a stronger relationship between Japan and Nigeria moving forward,” he said.

Oku highlighted that, despite the reduced visitor count, Japanese companies had productive engagements with Nigerian businesses, securing valuable contracts and laying the groundwork for future partnerships. “Even with fewer visitors, business discussions were fruitful, and significant agreements were reached,” Oku noted.
Looking ahead to the 2025 trade fair, Oku expressed confidence in improved economic conditions and an increase in engagement. He also announced Nigeria’s confirmed participation in the upcoming Japan Expo in April 2025, where Nigerian businesses will join global participants in showcasing their innovations and products.
“Nigeria’s presence at the Japan Expo will be significant,” Oku remarked, emphasizing Nigeria’s importance to Japan as a key partner in global trade initiatives.
