Heavy downpours have wreaked havoc on major markets in Lagos today, severely impacting sales and causing widespread disruption.
The early morning rains led to flooding in key market areas, including, Oshodi, Balogun Market, Oyingbo Market, Mile 12 Market, and Ileapo Market.
Traders were seen struggling to salvage their goods as waterlogged stalls and muddy pathways made movement difficult.
Many merchants reported significant losses, with perishable goods like fruits and vegetables bearing the brunt of the damage. “I couldn’t save my tomatoes and peppers; everything is soaked and ruined,” lamented Mariam Adeyemi, a vendor at Mile 12 Market.

The unexpected deluge has also affected transportation, with many roads leading to these markets submerged, causing traffic gridlock and further hampering access for both buyers and sellers.
Shoppers, deterred by the inclement weather and challenging conditions, stayed away in large numbers, exacerbating the day’s poor sales.
Authorities have urged traders and residents to take precautions and have promised to address the flooding issues.
However, immediate relief for the affected traders remains uncertain as they count their losses and hope for better weather in the coming days.
