The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering graduates to become job creators, not just job seekers

“Whether they want to work for someone or build something of their own, we’re backing them every step of the way,” said Tokunbo Alausa, who revealed that tech tools like geofencing and NIN verification would be used to track student attendance and performance.

He added that the NELFUND platform will manage stipends, payments to training centres, and programme operations, aiming to produce a skilled, globally competitive, and entrepreneurial workforce.

At the same event, Prof. Idris Bugaje of the NBTE insisted that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) must remain under the Ministry of Education to preserve global standards. He also proposed a N77,000 monthly stipend for TVET students to boost enrolment.

Nigeria’s first female mechanic, Sandra Aguebor, called for more investment in automotive training, particularly for women. Her group has already trained over 6,000 female mechanics.

“Women have the multitasking ability to thrive in this field,” she said, urging stronger support for women in TVET.
