Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has urged a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s education system to address the disconnect between academic institutions and industry demands.
Speaking on Saturday while hosting the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, at the Government House in Maiduguri, Zulum expressed concern over the lack of job-readiness among graduates.
“We face two major issues in our educational system: the disconnect between institutions and industries and the gap between the labour market and graduates, many of whom lack the skills to drive innovation or secure employment,” he said.

Zulum called on NELFUND to promote entrepreneurship, technical education, and vocational training to prepare students for self-employment and reduce dependency on limited job opportunities.
“Beyond loans, explore ways to support entrepreneurship education and technical training to address reluctance toward these critical fields,” he added.
Sawyerr, in his remarks, highlighted NELFUND’s mission to curb school dropout rates by offering interest-free loans, with repayment set at 10% of the recipient’s income upon employment.
