In a strategic move to address the ongoing tomato shortage and escalating prices, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has planted over two hectares of tomatoes.

The initiative began with Farm Practical Year (FPY) students cultivating the seedlings in 600 trays, each containing 105 seedlings, at the Soilless Farm in Ogun State. These efforts have led to the successful transplantation of over 60,000 tomato seedlings into the farm.

During a recent inspection visit, FUNAAB’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress. He emphasized the dual benefits of the initiative, noting that it would not only meet immediate market demands but also offer valuable practical agricultural education to the students.

The harvest is anticipated by the end of September 2024, which is expected to help mitigate some of the market pressures experienced by both consumers and vendors.
