Since the announcement of the reduction of oil subsidies, The News Agency of Nigeria reported that transportation industries, particularly auto mechanics, have been very low in most regions of the state.

The withdrawal of fuel subsidies, according to several mechanics interviewed on Wednesday, had a severe impact on their services.

A mechanic at Yeshua Workshop named Malam Quadri Usman reported a sharp decline in the number of automobiles using his business.

According to him, “Hike in the price of Fuel has forced many car owners to park their vehicles at home, which consequently, reduced the number of vehicles that come for services to my garage.”

Malam Yusuf Abdul, a Mercedes Benz technician, stated, “Our position is so bad that most mechanics are fired from their employment, and since we are less engaged as a result of gasoline price increases, there is no patronage from clients.

“Many vehicles are already parked, and our customers are unable to afford petrol at the price of N630, irrespective of whether it was offered for N550 per liter.

Except for a couple who occasionally go a distance to work, all of my apprentices who live close to the workshop have ceased showing up, he said.

A second mechanic, Mr. Abel Audu, stated that “Unlike before, this shop that was busy is now empty, no new customers, the old customers have abandoned their vehicles in the garage, and there is no money to buy fuel,” Audu claimed.

He claimed that whereas we used to work on anything between 10 and 13 vehicles every day, we now barely see more than two or three vehicles arrive at the workshop.

We have no choice but to seek out alternative employment since we cannot continue in this manner, said Audu. “Please intervene on our behalf,” he pleaded with the authorities.

In response to the increase in fuel prices, Mr. Olamide Bello, a civil servant, claimed that he had kept his vehicle at home to save his transportation costs.
