Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged residents, particularly women, to engage in agriculture to combat high living costs and enhance the state’s food security. Governor Fubara, represented by Head of Service George Nweake, emphasized that agriculture will be a priority in the 2025 budget, aligning with the administration’s policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
Speaking to the Women in Farming and Agro Allied Support Network (WIFAASN) at Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara highlighted the need for genuine farmers, not “portfolio” farmers. “We will prioritize those actively involved in farming,” he stated.
Fubara recalled the state’s rich agricultural potential, citing neglected sectors like oil palm production and fishing. He called on citizens to revitalize these areas to ensure food security, aligning with the First Lady’s national initiatives, such as the “Every Home a Garden” program.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Victor Kii, reinforced the governor’s dedication to developing the agricultural sector, noting the state’s upcoming participation in the special Agro Processing Zone Project.
WIFAASN National Coordinator, Mrs. Glory Coker, expressed the group’s aim to reduce food costs through mechanized farming, seeking government support for resources like processing machines, fertilizer, and seedlings. The state chapter of WIFAASN is set to launch on July 20, 2024, with logistical support requested for the event’s success.
