A massive fire erupted in the early hours of Wednesday, devastating a recycling hub and the groundnut mill market in Dakata, Kano State, with losses estimated in the billions.
The inferno reportedly started at the recycling hub, where plastics and scrap materials are processed.
Witnesses claim electrical sparks from nearby poles ignited the blaze, which rapidly spread to the market, consuming food and provisions.
Kano State’s newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Bakori, visited the site on his first day in office, calling the incident tragic.

He confirmed the arrest of a looter attempting to steal equipment amid the chaos and assured the public of a thorough investigation.
Commending the swift intervention of the Kano State Fire Service and private fire units, Bakori emphasized the need for preventive measures.
Survivors of the disaster, left in distress, are pleading with the state and federal governments for urgent support.
