The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to implement continuous year-round farming for both dry and wet seasons to enhance food production across Nigeria. This initiative was announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, during a press briefing in Abuja.
Key staple crops such as rice, maize, cassava, sesame, soybean, and sorghum are the primary targets for this year-round cultivation strategy. Senator Kyari noted that wheat was the central crop in 15 of Nigeria’s 36 states during the last dry season, with several states exceeding their targeted hectares.

“Our strategic workplan incorporates immediate, short, medium, and long-term timelines to rapidly develop Nigerian agriculture,” Kyari stated. He emphasized that this comprehensive approach aims to achieve continuous cropping throughout the year, in both dry and wet seasons.
President Bola Tinubu has prioritized agriculture and food security, expressing readiness to embrace diverse ideas that could sustainably develop the sector and attract further investments. “Our national agricultural goal is to enhance production and productivity, with a strong emphasis on adding value to our produce,” Kyari added.
To support these efforts, the government is gradually incorporating mechanization into agricultural practices by partnering with reputable agricultural equipment manufacturers worldwide. This move aims to expand investment opportunities within Nigeria’s agricultural economy, driving growth and ensuring food security.
