The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), has finalized plans to implement the International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN), a move aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s security and increasing revenue generation.
The NSC’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Pius Akutah, represented by Director of Special Duties Mustapha Zubairu, revealed the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification agenda. “The ICTN will automate cargo tracking, ensuring better data on imports and boosting revenue at seaports,” Akutah explained during an event in Lagos.

Beyond ICTN, the NSC is adopting innovative technologies like blockchain, IoT, and Enterprise Content Management to streamline operations and lead the shift towards e-commerce and digital trade. These measures are expected to modernize port operations, improve customs efficiency, and enhance supply chain management.
The council also plans to foster public-private partnerships to address infrastructure challenges and promote sustainability in Nigeria’s maritime sector, including green shipping practices. These efforts aim to make Nigeria’s ports more efficient, eco-friendly, and attractive to international investors and trading partners.
