The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has announced plans to establish mini tanneries across all 36 states, aimed at processing hides and skins into leather.

According to NILEST Director-General, Mohammed Yakubu, these factories will help support infrastructure and technology for the leather industry, promoting employment and foreign exchange generation.

Yakubu, also chair of the National Leather Policy Implementation Committee, highlighted the industry’s potential, citing a need to address infrastructure challenges, especially the high cost of power, which inflates production costs by over 50%.

He noted that Nigeria’s leather industry once held a strong global presence, with branches in Europe, and aims to revive this status.

Additionally, Yakubu explained that the initiative would reduce ‘ponmo’ (animal skin) consumption, which is common due to the current lack of processing facilities.

By establishing mini tanneries, NILEST intends to make leather processing more accessible, boosting local industry and exports.
