Nigeria is intensifying efforts to reduce wheat imports as the Federal Government ramps up domestic production for the 2025/2026 dry season under the National Agricultural Growth and Agro Pocket Project (NAGS-AP).

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this in Borno State during the flag-off of subsidised input distribution, describing the initiative as a key pillar of the country’s food sovereignty strategy.

According to Kyari, tens of thousands of hectares have been designated nationwide for wheat cultivation, with registered farmers set to receive targeted support, including certified seeds, fertilisers and crop protection products. He said the programme has delivered measurable gains in previous seasons, driven by timely input supply and improved coordination.

To deepen impact this season, the government is deploying Agricultural Extension Agents to provide continuous, on-field advisory services to farmers, aimed at improving agronomic practices, yields and overall productivity.

Kyari stressed that strict quality control remains central to the programme, noting that fertiliser and seed quality officers have been mobilised to ensure all inputs meet approved standards and are delivered promptly. He added that maintaining input quality is critical to sustaining farmer confidence, boosting output and raising incomes.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, welcomed the sustained federal support for irrigation and dry-season farming, while smallholder farmers pledged to scale up wheat production in line with national food security goals.
