The Plateau state farming community has received a significant boost from the Federal Government through comprehensive training and the distribution of agricultural essentials. Over 243 farmers were the beneficiaries of this initiative aimed at elevating agricultural production and ensuring food security in the region.
During the distribution event held in Jos, Mr. Temitope Fadashemi, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), revealed that this program is a strategic move by the government to combat poverty on a national scale. Dr. Steve Dowoh, the State Coordinator of FMAFS, represented Fadashemi and emphasized the objective of enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Implemented through the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS), the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing poverty at its root, recognizing agriculture’s pivotal role in fostering economic growth and development.
Fadashemi reiterated the significance of the program, stating that it is not merely an investment in agriculture but also an investment in the nation’s future. By equipping farmers with necessary tools and knowledge, the initiative aims to boost productivity, resilience, and sustainable farming practices, thereby laying the groundwork for a resilient and prosperous agricultural sector.
Mr. Samson Bugama, Plateau Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, urged beneficiaries to maximize the support provided by both federal and state governments to bolster production and ensure food security. Bugama emphasized the importance of farmers’ contribution to national poverty reduction and stressed the need to utilize available resources effectively.

Mr. Ishaku Jelamsem, Programme Manager of the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP), pledged to offer technical assistance and strict monitoring to ensure the judicious utilization of distributed inputs. He emphasized the privileged position of the beneficiaries and outlined plans for continuous support and guidance to propel them towards agricultural success.
Representing FDAE Director Mr. Michael Brooks, Dorathy Botar highlighted the rigorous validation process undertaken to select beneficiaries for the program. Brooks encouraged the beneficiaries to persevere despite challenges such as insecurity, assuring them of ongoing support from the government agencies involved.
Through concerted efforts and strategic interventions, the Federal Government aims to empower Plateau farmers, paving the way for enhanced agricultural productivity, economic growth, and improved food security in the region.
