Mrs Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State, has declared a 40-day shutdown of the Island-bound lane of the Alaka-Costain-Iganmu segment of the Eko Bridge, which will commence on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos, Kesha stated that the announcement was made in consultation with the Lagos State Government as a result of damage discovered on several of the bridge components that required immediate repair.
She stated that a delay could jeopardize the integrity and structural stability of the entire bridge, putting users at risk.
“It should be noted that any additional delay in the modifications and replacement of some of these bridge members could undermine the reliability and structural strength of the entire bridge, and the consequences of this can be better imagined,” she stated.
She remembered that during the launching of the Apongbon segment of the bridge, she and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that periodic closures would be carried out as maintenance work advanced.
“This closing is to allow the contractor, Messrs Buildwell Plants, and Equipment Industries Ltd., to complete the necessary repairs in order to restore the bridge’s integrity within the time frame specified.”
“While the service lane leading to Iponri will be open, some alternate routes are also available for motorists traveling from Western Avenue and its environs.”
“Motorists are advised to comply with the Traffic-Management Team that has been placed on the highway to manage traffic,” she stated.
She praised the public for their patience and cooperation. (NAN)
