The Federal Government has released new information on its conditional cash transfer program, which is expected to reach 15 million people.
Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, stated that the cash transfer will begin on October 17, 2023.
“With the approval from the President, which we hope to get this week, on the 17th of October, we will officially launch the conditional cash transfer to 15 million households in Nigeria,” the minister told Channels Television.
“We’re conducting a verification exercise right now.” Every state can attest to the fact that we have put boots on the ground – people working with the state cash transfer office, governors who are the chairmen of the steering committee, and several other people.
“All of this is to be sure those who are on the national social register truly are Nigerians who fall [spend] within the under $1.95 a day [range] and they deserve to have it.”

According to Edu, some people on the record may have died or moved up the economic ladder, thus the verification process should clean up the register.
“Okay, two things. First, as we speak, we are on the ground cleaning up that data and performing a thorough verification, comparing the BVN, NIM, and other information to identify these folks and ensure we are dealing with genuine individuals.
“Of course, there’s biometrics involved, as well as capturing the head of the household as well as a picture of the household so it can be located.”
According to The Eagle, Nigerians have had a difficult time recently due to the hard economy, which is now characterized by high costs for products and services.
The conditional cash transfer scheme is expected to boost the purchasing power of poor Nigerians, especially given the current economic situation.
