The Federal Government has launched a comprehensive roadmap aimed at tackling plastic pollution in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for private-sector investment in plastic waste management. The event, held in Abuja, was organized by the Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, under the theme “Towards a System Change in Plastic Pollution: A Roadmap for the Sustainable Use of Plastics in Nigeria.”

Minister of Environment and NPAP Chairman Balarabe Lawal highlighted the significant challenge Nigeria faces due to the increasing volume of plastic waste generated in the country. However, he noted that this challenge also presents opportunities for a robust circular economy within the plastic waste management sector.

“This is where we can stimulate job creation, foster the establishment of micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises, and attract private sector investment, including foreign direct investment through building the necessary infrastructure for the plastic economy,” Lawal stated.

Since joining the Global Plastic Action Partnership in February 2021, Nigeria has been proactive in addressing plastic pollution. Last year, the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with GPAP, launched the Nigerian International Plastic Action Partnership—a locally led, multi-stakeholder platform focused on creating sustainable solutions to plastic waste management.

Clemence Schmid, Director of the Global Plastic Action Partnership at the World Economic Forum, acknowledged the progress made since 2021. “Today’s event represents more than just a launch. It is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to forging a cleaner and more sustainable future for Nigeria,” she said.

With 175 nations working towards a UN legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution, the Nigerian initiative aims to inspire inclusive, evidence-based efforts that cultivate a thriving circular economy, benefiting both the environment and the economy.
