The Federal Government has received the first batch of 2,000 tractors from Belarus, advancing President Bola Tinubu’s plan to modernize agriculture and boost food production in Nigeria.

The newly arrived heavy-duty equipment has been assembled in Abuja as part of a mechanization partnership between Nigeria and Belarus, formalized in September 2024.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, hailed the development as a major step toward transforming the nation’s agricultural sector. He emphasized that the initiative will enhance productivity and strengthen food security.

Each tractor will be deployed with 9,072 assorted agricultural implements designed to support various farming activities. The distribution will follow three key models:

  • Direct Purchase: Individuals and organizations can buy the tractors outright.
  • Leasing Scheme: Farmers can access mechanization services affordably without full ownership costs.
  • Service Provider Model: Tractor service centers will be established in farming communities, allowing smallholder farmers to lease equipment as needed.

The government aims to ensure broad access to modern farming tools, boosting efficiency and increasing food production across the country.
