In Lagos, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of the Federal Government has given yam processing machinery to fifteen women and young people.
The Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority office in Oko Oba Agege hosted the session, which is a part of the “Emergency empowerment of youth and women on yam processing, packaging, value addition and utilization in the South-East, South-South, and South-West regions.”
Speaking with Daily Independent while delivering the equipment to the recipients, Omolara Oguntuyi, Lagos State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, stated that the goal of the intervention is to help the state’s yam farmers process their crop into flour and poundo.
She stated that a few months prior, farmers in the state received instruction on processing yams, and it was during that training that the facilitators chose the recipients of the apparatus based on the participants’ engagement and enthusiasm in the process.
“You can’t just hand the equipment to anyone; it needs to be someone who will be passionate about using it and know how to operate it.

Adebowale Rotimi, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s Data Processing Officer, stated that he arrived to oversee the procedure and was motivated by the women’s eagerness to work.
He asserted his confidence in the current administration’s ability to address the issue of food security.
The beneficiaries are there to pick up their equipment, according to Kosoko Tawakaltu, Program Manager, Lagos State Agric Development Authority. She noted that training in yam processing, packaging, and marketing was provided for women and youths in the past.
According to her, each state conducted training on crops in which it possesses a comparative advantage. She mentioned that Lagos had trained on yam, cassava, and maize.
She expressed her confidence that the recipients will effectively utilize the equipment to enhance their standard of living.
One of the recipients, Taiwo Adenike, expressed gratitude to the federal government for the effort and said that she would be using the machinery to process more after receiving the training and starting on a smaller scale right away.
Due to the state’s restricted land area, Taiwo, who farms yam, cassava, and plantains among other things, requested assistance from the government in securing her farms. She has over 60 hectares of farmland in Osun State, but herdsmen constantly come their cows to devour her products.
