Abubakar Kyari, the new Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, took office on Monday and promised that the Federal Government would feed Nigerians and export food to earn foreign exchange for the country.
He stated that these were the goals of his team, emphasizing that Nigeria had the potential to achieve them.
Kyari spoke during a brief reception hosted by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Abuja for him and the Minister of State, Aliyu Abdullahi.
We are aware of the challenge we are facing, he continued. One of the major issues we face in this nation is hunger. When I refer to hunger, I also mean a lack of food, and there are problems with food security, including insecurity and flooding.
“The political resolve led by President Bola Tinubu is the biggest hope we have for me, my colleague the Minister of State, and even state governors.
“I believe we face a significant challenge, but it is manageable. In addition to securing and feeding the nation, our goal is to export food, which is both possible and imminent”.
Prof. Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State, who accompanied the ministers to the ministry, stated that Nigeria requires long- and medium-term plans that are sustainable to address food insecurity.
He recommended that the nation invest in commercial agriculture and use cutting-edge farming methods, including irrigation and green technology.
“What we are doing right now, giving Nigerians palliatives, won’t ever solve our problems because these are temporary fixes. We need to look for sustainable, long-term solutions to the problem of insecurity and food insecurity in Nigeria”.
“Investing in commercial agriculture, modern agriculture, irrigated agriculture, green technology, emerging technology, and so on, is therefore the only alternative we have; this is the only solution.
