The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) and the Ministry of Youth Development, has launched the distribution of 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles to empower Nigerian youth.
The flag-off event, held on Tuesday at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, was a key part of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.
Speaking at the event, Project Director of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Michael Oluwagbemi, highlighted the program as a major step towards fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to lowering transportation costs, improving economic conditions, and creating jobs through the use of environmentally friendly fuels.
“These 2,000 tricycles mark the beginning of a transportation revolution in Nigeria,” Oluwagbemi announced. “Assembled locally in Shagamu, this initiative not only helps reduce carbon emissions but also provides significant employment opportunities in the manufacturing, maintenance, and operation of these vehicles.”

He emphasized that over 50 young people were trained in the assembly process, underscoring the initiative’s role in youth empowerment. Oluwagbemi noted that the deployment of CNG-powered tricycles across the country would help convert Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources into wealth and jobs, marking a small but vital step toward a gas-powered future.
Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, praised the initiative as a timely intervention, especially in the current era of economic reforms. She highlighted that the tricycles would help ease transportation challenges faced by both transporters and citizens, while also improving the quality of life for young Nigerians.
“This initiative demonstrates the Tinubu administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and economic well-being. The National Youth Investment Fund will provide the necessary financial support for young entrepreneurs to thrive in the transport sector,” she said. Dr. Bio-Ibrahim further expressed optimism about reaching the initiative’s target of deploying 2 million CNG tricycles nationwide.
The initiative represents a clear effort by the Federal Government to enhance the nation’s economic landscape through green energy solutions and youth empowerment, signaling a positive step towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
