Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs, announced on Monday the introduction of a groundbreaking $100 million World Bank funded project aimed at economically empowering Nigerian women.
Speaking during a briefing with journalists in Abuja, Kennedy-Ohanenye disclosed details of the project, named P-BAT Cares, which aims to enhance the capacities of women across the country.
The minister emphasized that P-BAT Cares will tackle issues related to norms and harmful practices affecting women and children, encompassing a comprehensive approach to address various societal challenges.
Kennedy-Ohanenye highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to uplifting vulnerable and rural women, noting that efforts are underway to ensure direct support reaches those in need.
“President Tinubu has emphasized the importance of supporting the less privileged by signing for a restructured Nigeria for women project,” Kennedy-Ohanenye stated.
“Under his leadership, there will be no more reliance on advocacies, meetings, consultancies, or technical support funded by borrowed or donor monies.”
Kennedy-Ohanenye stressed the crucial role of the media in advancing the government’s agenda for women and children, emphasizing that empowering women translates to nation-building.

She announced President Tinubu’s unveiling of the P-BAT Care initiative on March 7th, underscoring his dedication to addressing various challenges faced by Nigerian women.
The P-BAT Care project encompasses women’s economic empowerment initiatives, interventions against harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), child labor, and early marriages.
Additionally, President Tinubu has endorsed the establishment of a mobile court to combat violence against women and children, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to safeguarding their rights.
Expressing concerns over the exploitation of donor funds by certain groups, Kennedy-Ohanenye reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency.
She announced the inauguration of an integrity brigade, urging the media to actively participate in combating misappropriation of funds meant for vulnerable Nigerians.
Kennedy-Ohanenye concluded by urging all stakeholders to utilize this opportunity to drive positive change and promote integrity in the management of resources allocated for women’s empowerment and societal development.
