The federal government has scaled up its clean energy efforts by announcing a new target to distribute five million Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to households across Nigeria by 2030.

The initiative, a key part of the Decade of Gas strategy, was unveiled by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, during the launch of the LPG penetration programme in Sokoto State.

The new target means one million households will be converted to clean cooking gas annually over the next five years, with the government aiming to reduce indoor pollution, improve public health, and promote environmental sustainability.

“This programme is not just about energy—it’s about economic empowerment,” Ekpo said. “We’re creating jobs across the LPG value chain and supporting local manufacturers and distributors.”

The Minister urged recipients to embrace the cylinders responsibly and act as ambassadors for clean energy in their communities.

The initiative also received private sector backing, with BUA Group supporting the cylinder distribution. The partnership is expected to deepen LPG access, especially in underserved regions, and stimulate small-scale distribution businesses in the energy sector.

The move supports Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals and strengthens opportunities for micro and small enterprises engaged in clean energy services, retail, and distribution.
