The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security on Monday empowered 200 poultry farmers with day-old chicks and 500 cassava farmers with cassava cuttings in Edo State.

Dr Samuel Owoicho, the Edo Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, said during the event in Benin that the initiative would improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Owoicho stated that the initiative was in line with the ministry’s mission to promote sustainable agricultural development, enhance food security, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

He added that it would also equip farmers with modern farming practices, boost productivity, increase income, and empower them economically.

The initiative is expected to promote sustainable agricultural practices, strengthen the agricultural value chain, ensure food security, reduce poverty, and promote economic growth.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Martha Mogudadu, a poultry farmer in Oredo Local Government Area, expressed her gratitude for the gesture. She received 25 chicks, two 50kg bags of poultry feed, and multivitamins, and was promised cash support for raising the birds.

Mr Autthur Aiya, a cassava farmer from Orhionmwon Local Government Area, said the initiative would encourage more people to embrace farming. He thanked the Federal Government for the move and urged them to do more.
