The Nigerian government has renewed its focus on developing the nation’s arts and creative industries, announcing fresh commitments to support artistic talent and infrastructure. Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, shared this vision at the recent launch of EVVDEE Art Academy in Lagos, founded by Dr. Fola David, a Guinness World Record holder recognized for creating the world’s largest individual drawing.

The EVVDEE Academy aims to address skill gaps within Nigeria’s art sector by providing artists with a collaborative community where they can learn, connect, and grow professionally. Musawa emphasized the government’s interest in collaborating with the academy to strengthen talent development and ensure artists have access to vital resources to foster their careers.

“We shall be leveraging this template to advance the creative sector by investing in talent skills development, allowing artists to thrive as full-fledged professionals,” she stated.

Ayo Adeagbo, Special Assistant to the President on Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, praised the academy as a step forward in placing Nigeria’s art on the global stage, aligning with the administration’s goals to spotlight Nigerian creativity worldwide.

Dr. Fola David explained that the academy was born out of a need to bridge gaps he observed within the art community, particularly the lack of networking and professional support for artists.

“Our aim with EVVDEE is to foster a sense of unity and support among artists, creating a family-like bond where they can share ideas, learn, and address both industry and personal challenges together,” David noted. The academy will host quarterly meetings, allowing artists to collaborate on current trends and address issues within the sector.

The academy plans to offer a variety of art events, short courses, and masterclass sessions, alongside an art residency and exchange programs for artists across Nigeria and abroad. Renowned artists and art academics, including Dotun Popoola, Ken Nwadiogbu, Oscar Nkonu, and Abisola K Gbadamosi, who serves as the Academy Director, will contribute to the curriculum.

Additionally, EVVDEE has secured a partnership with the National Gallery of Art to provide exhibition opportunities and invite international art lecturers. Set to open in 2025, the academy will also offer certifications in disciplines like painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, and animation, accredited by the National Gallery of Art.
