The federal government announced on Tuesday that the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of various grains nationwide has begun. This distribution is part of efforts to address the national food crisis exacerbated by inflation.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, revealed this during an engagement with the National Assembly’s Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development. The committee, chaired by Senator Saliu Mustapha, inquired about the government’s plans to combat high food prices and ensure accessibility for the masses.
Senator Kyari informed the lawmakers that the government had initiated the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of grains to state capitals, following a directive from the President. He emphasized the need for secrecy in some distribution movements due to security concerns. Additionally, he announced plans to release an additional 58,500 metric tons of milled rice into the market to stabilize prices. These actions aim to alleviate the hardship faced by Nigerians and prevent food warehouse vandalism, which the ministry is addressing in collaboration with security agencies.
