The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern advisory to consumers, emphasizing the importance of verifying product claims amidst recent deceptive practices uncovered during an operation at Garki Modern Market, FCT.
During the operation, which revealed deceptive rice weight claims at an outlet within the market, Abdullahi, a spokesperson for the FCCPC, underscored the necessity for consumers to exercise vigilance and report any inconsistencies they encounter. He directed consumers to utilize the complaint tab on the commission’s website, www.fccpc.gov.ng, to register concerns.

Citing Section 125 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), Abdullahi highlighted that businesses are prohibited from making false or deceptive representations regarding material facts to consumers. Furthermore, he pointed out that Section 138 imposes liability on manufacturers, importers, distributors, and suppliers for breaches of implied obligations by law, including product claims.
The FCCPC’s targeted enforcement operation at Garki Modern Market in Abuja is part of its ongoing commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and interests as stipulated in the FCCPA 2018. Sections 17(l)(s), 116(2), 124, 125, 138, and 155 of the act serve as the legal foundation for the commission’s actions.
The primary objective of the operation was to verify the accuracy of product claims specifically concerning 25kg and 50kg bags of rice.
