A N1 billion family-based business grant has been launched to boost small enterprises across the Ukanafun and Oruk Anam communities in Akwa Ibom State, offering fresh capital for households looking to start or scale their ventures.

The initiative, introduced under the Renewed Hope/ARISE Agenda Grant Programme, provides direct seed funding to families to strengthen micro and small businesses at the grassroots. It was conceived by the member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Hon. Unyime Idem.

At the launch, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the project reflects a practical model for economic empowerment that supports early-stage entrepreneurs and strengthens community-level commerce. He noted that empowering families to build sustainable income streams is essential to driving inclusive growth.

He added that the programme aligns with the federal government’s push for MSME support, job creation and poverty reduction, stressing that real development happens when households gain the means to run productive enterprises.

Akwa Ibom Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, encouraged beneficiaries to apply the funds responsibly to strengthen their ventures. She also highlighted the state’s commitment to supporting business-focused programmes that uplift families.

Hon. Unyime Idem confirmed that 3,000 families benefited in the first round, adding that the initiative is designed to stimulate small business activity across the constituency. More rounds are expected to follow to accommodate additional families seeking support.

The programme is set to enhance household income, expand local trading activities, empower women and youth, and promote self-reliance across the communities.
