In a bid to tackle the gender gap in economic participation, the Enugu State Government has unveiled a new initiative focused on empowering women entrepreneurs. This effort was marked by the inauguration of the Technical Working Group for Women’s Economic Empowerment.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, Nigeria ranks 130th in gender equality, emphasizing the urgent need for progress. World Bank data further highlights a significant disparity, revealing that women own only 34% of businesses, while men control 66%.

To address these issues, the Enugu State Government, in partnership with the South Sahara Development Organization, is localizing the National Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy. This policy aims to create a comprehensive framework to support vulnerable women, streamline women-focused programs, and consolidate efforts under one cohesive strategy.
The WEE Policy is set to tackle various challenges faced by women, including access to finance, market opportunities, skills development, and legal support. This initiative marks a pivotal step towards fostering a more inclusive environment for women entrepreneurs in Enugu State.
