The Enugu State Government has initiated a registration program across its 17 Local Government Areas to catalog its unemployed citizens for potential job placements.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr. Chika Ugwuoke, aims to address unemployment through targeted recruitment.

In an interview with  Ugwuoke revealed that the register has already amassed raw data on approximately 33,000 unemployed individuals, including graduates, men, women, and secondary school leavers.

To expand the registry, the ministry plans to conduct awareness campaigns encouraging more people to enroll.

“Governor Peter Mbah has prioritized human capacity development, with specific interventions planned for youth, women, and civil servants,” Ugwuoke stated. “Recognizing the existing unemployment issues, the governor emphasized the need for a comprehensive labor market information management database.”

The data collection, which began within the first three months of the administration, profiles unemployed and self-employed individuals, forming a robust database for future employment initiatives.

Additionally, Ugwuoke highlighted the administration’s efforts to clear pension arrears based on committee recommendations. Verification processes are ongoing to ensure all pensioners are legitimate, with state-level verifications completed and local government assessments underway.

Regarding the new minimum wage, the commissioner noted that the government is awaiting the committee’s report on this matter.

Moreover, under the governor’s Sustainable Development Program, a fashion skill acquisition center has been established, along with other centers aimed at enhancing residents’ skills and boosting the state’s economy.

Further plans include a partnership with the Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO) to create a skill development center for youth training in both soft and hard skills.

This initiative is pending final approval following the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
