The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have signed an $11.18 million agreement to enhance rice production across the region.
ECOWAS President, Omar Touray, announced the partnership in a video shared on the commission’s social media platforms on Tuesday, emphasizing its role in achieving self-sufficiency in rice production.
Touray lauded AfDB’s continued support, referencing previous collaborations on key projects like the Lagos-Abidjan corridor.

He assured swift implementation of the program, stating, “We have taken measures to expedite the process and will continue to do so.”
AfDB’s Director-General for Nigeria, Abdul Kamara, described the initiative as a crucial step toward food security in the sub-region.
He highlighted the role of the ECOWAS Rice Observatory and AfDB’s special agro-industrial processing zones in driving the project’s success.
“This initiative will create a strong foundation for West African countries to reduce reliance on rice imports and achieve self-sufficiency,” Kamara stated.
