As of December 3, 2024, the price of cooking gas (Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG) in Nigeria has seen significant increases, with the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder reaching approximately ₦17,000.
This marks a 41.6% rise from ₦12,000 in July 2024. Historical trends show consistent price hikes, with a 58.68% increase in October 2024 compared to the previous year.
Several factors contribute to this price instability, including supply constraints, global market dynamics, currency depreciation, infrastructure challenges, and the removal of petrol subsidies.
Despite efforts like the government’s export ban on LPG to stabilize prices, challenges in the domestic supply chain have kept prices high.
Current retail prices for cooking gas per kilogram include:
1kg Cooking gas – ₦1,400
3kg Cooking gas – ₦4,200
5kg Cooking gas – ₦7,000
6kg Cooking gas – ₦8,400
10kg Cooking gas – ₦14,000
12.5kg Cooking gas – ₦17,500
These increases are impacting household budgets across Nigeria, with regional price variations influenced by transportation and local demand.
