President Bola Tinubu has announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will significantly enhance access to production and marketing centers for 30 million people. This declaration was made during the inauguration of the 700km highway project in Lagos, marking his first year in office.
During the launch, Tinubu emphasized the manifold benefits of the highway, noting that its construction will create thousands of direct jobs and many more indirect employment opportunities. He highlighted that the project will spur community development, bringing economic opportunities closer to the people and facilitating seamless movement along the coast.
Initiated in March, the highway will traverse nine states, with additional routes connecting to northern regions. Despite facing criticism for the timing and the necessary demolition of some buildings, the government remains committed to the project’s completion. Minister of Works David Umahi disclosed that 750 houses are slated for demolition, with N2.75 billion allocated for compensation, though some stakeholders have argued this amount is insufficient.
In his address, Tinubu appealed for public understanding, especially from those affected by the demolitions, assuring them of the government’s compassion and commitment to providing adequate compensation. He described the highway as a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity, set to connect communities, boost trade, tourism, and create new opportunities.

Tinubu also praised the engineering team and stakeholders for their dedication to the project, emphasizing its potential to transform neglected towns and cities along the coastal route. He highlighted the importance of safety, sustainability, and social responsibility, urging all involved to ensure the project benefits future generations.
Furthermore, Tinubu commended the partnership model of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Plus Finance (EPC+F) adopted by the Ministry of Works, which involves government investment alongside private sector funding. He acknowledged the efforts of Minister David Umahi and his team in ensuring quality work from contractors.
The 10-lane road project, extending from Lagos to Cross River and passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, represents a key step in enhancing national connectivity and economic growth. Tinubu concluded by expressing gratitude to key contributors like HiTech Chairman Gilbert Chagoury and business magnate Aliko Dangote for their support and investment.
The highway will be constructed using concrete pavement, and a committee has been established to review and compensate landowners affected by the project. This committee, including representatives from the ministry, Lagos State, affected communities, and other stakeholders, will ensure fair compensation for those impacted by the construction.
