Taxi fares in Abuja’s Area One Motor Park have dropped by up to 40% following a federal drive to convert vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The move, championed by the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), is designed to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal and promote clean energy adoption among transport operators.

Over half of the park’s taxis now run on CNG, reducing fuel costs and allowing drivers to offer cheaper rates. PCNGI CEO Michael Oluwagbemi, represented by Regional Coordinator David Idako, confirmed this during a press briefing in Abuja.

To ensure compliance, a joint task force from PCNGI and NURTW is monitoring fare standards. CNG taxis are marked with stickers and official fare tags. Offenders risk sanctions.

NURTW’s Garki Branch Secretary, Ibrahim Jibril, disclosed that 75% of their members have embraced the switch, calling it a “win-win” for both operators and commuters.

This marks a significant step in Nigeria’s push for affordable, sustainable transport while creating cost-saving opportunities for small taxi businesses in the capital.
