The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services is set to implement a centralized generator at the Lagos Island market to address the issue of frequent fires. During the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference organized by the LSFRS on Tuesday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu underscored the critical role of collective responsibility in fire disaster prevention.
Sanwo-Olu pointed out that many fires in Lagos result from careless behavior and called on market traders to take accountability for their actions. He emphasized that while the government has made significant investments in fire stations, fire engines, and firefighter recruitment, community involvement remains essential. He condemned the hazardous practices of storing petrol in markets and refueling generators while in use, urging market leaders to enforce safety protocols.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of LSFRS, highlighted the necessity for stakeholders to work together to find lasting solutions to fire incidents, citing negligence and carelessness as primary causes. She announced the government’s initiative to introduce a centralized generator system in the Lagos Island market, replacing individual generators to mitigate fire risks.
In his keynote address, Olugbenga Oyerinde, Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to creating an environment conducive to collaboration with various organizations and experts. This effort aims to enhance emergency management and fire disaster prevention using advanced technological approaches. The three-day conference is focused on developing comprehensive strategies to prevent fire incidents and ensure community safety.
