The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to launch a Virtual Currency Museum Gallery, a move aimed at expanding public access to the nation’s currency history through digital innovation.

CBN Deputy Governor, Operations, Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, made the announcement during the International Museums Day (IMD) celebration in Abuja.

Shonubi disclosed that the virtual museum is being developed in partnership with Google and the CBN’s Information Technology Department, allowing Nigerians to explore the bank’s artefacts and exhibits online from anywhere in the world.

“Thanks to technology, the Central Bank of Nigeria Currency Museum is working with Google and our in-house IT team to establish a Virtual Reality Museum,” he said.

“This is a way for the public to engage with our heritage from the comfort of their homes. It offers a global connection that eliminates the need to physically visit our museum in Abuja.”

Highlighting the power of art and history in storytelling, Shonubi noted that museum exhibits continue to reflect humanity’s shared experiences, cultural divisions, and creative spirit — all across time and borders.

Director of Currency Operations, Mr. Ahmed Umar, emphasized that museums play a key role in connecting the past to the present and shaping public understanding of both.

“Museums help us revisit our roots. Art and artefacts speak to what makes us human — what connects or divides us, what inspires or provokes us,” he said.

Umar added that the CBN’s initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure financial and cultural education remains accessible, especially in an increasingly digital age.

Mr. Gimba Abdul Mohammed, Director of Museums at the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, also spoke at the event. He stressed the importance of preservation and the complementary role of both physical and virtual museums.

“Objects of historical value must be preserved scientifically and securely. While physical museums remain essential, virtual museums serve as valuable extensions, especially given Nigeria’s diverse geography and digital needs,” he explained.

This year’s International Museums Day, themed “Museums, Sustainability and Well-being”, aims to promote awareness on the role of museums in cultural exchange, peacebuilding, and societal development.
