The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is set to recommence cattle transportation on its Warri-Itakpe route, according to Managing Director Fidet Okhiria. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Okhiria revealed that this development follows the creation of a new Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Tinubu.
The NRC, which had halted cattle movement by rail in 2017 due to technical issues, is now poised to resume this service within the next one to two months. This route will facilitate the movement of livestock from Itakpe in Kogi State to Warri in Delta State.
To modernize and improve goods transport, the NRC is introducing specially designed wagons for livestock. “We’ve built 15 wagons for livestock and they are being assembled in Kajola, Oyo State,” Okhiria said. These wagons are expected to be operational shortly, enhancing the efficiency of the railway system.

Okhiria emphasized that railway investments should be viewed for their social and economic benefits rather than immediate financial gains. He highlighted that efficient rail services would indirectly boost the economy by improving the movement of goods and connecting cities.
With these improvements, the NRC aims to support the nation’s economy through enhanced and efficient rail transport services.
