Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has assured traders affected by the recent fire at Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island that he will advocate for their support from both the state and federal governments.
The incident, which occurred approximately a month ago, was attributed to a generator explosion caused by the improper handling of fuel, resulting in extensive damage to around 20 buildings and 120 key shops.
Chief George, who was out of the country at the time of the incident, expressed his commitment to mobilize governmental assistance to help the traders rebuild their businesses. He emphasized that the issue transcends political affiliations and focuses on the welfare and economic recovery of the affected traders.

Accompanied by notable figures including former Deputy Governor Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele and former PDP State Chairman Captain Tunji Shelle (retired), Chief George was warmly received by the traders. The traders voiced their concerns, highlighting the lack of aid from both governmental levels since the disaster.
Oluwatoyin Dosunmu, speaking on behalf of the traders, revealed that the state government had requested documentation for assistance but emphasized that many traders lack the necessary paperwork. Another trader, Olalekan Ajanaku, noted that due to the absence of alternative livelihoods, they resorted to setting up makeshift stalls to continue their businesses, despite threats from the state government to forcibly remove them.
Chief George reiterated his determination to ensure that both state and federal authorities address the traders’ plight, stressing the urgency of restoring their businesses to sustain their economic viability.
