The Nigerian military has reopened Banex Plaza, a popular market in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja, following a week-long closure. The market had been shut down by military authorities on May 18, after a violent altercation between traders and military personnel.

The conflict began when thugs allegedly assaulted soldiers who were involved in a dispute with a trader over the sale of a defective phone. A customer, dissatisfied with the phone, had called in the soldiers, leading to the confrontation.

Although the police intervened to resolve the initial conflict, the situation escalated when soldiers later returned to the plaza, prompting an immediate shutdown of the market by the traders.

The military’s actions have been widely criticized by human rights activists, including Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana, as well as various civil society organizations. These groups condemned the military’s response, advocating for the reopening of the plaza and the restoration of normal business activities.
