The African Development Bank (AFDB) and the Nigerian federal government have unveiled plans to collaborate with the Enugu State Government in establishing Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) within the state.

This initiative aligns with Governor Dr. Peter Mbah’s commitment to establish SAPZ across the three senatorial zones, aiming to bolster commercial agriculture and transform rural areas into economic hubs.

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Ministry of Finance, led by Mr. Wale Edun, commended Enugu State’s preparedness during a visit to the proposed site spanning over 1,000 hectares. Dr. Akande Oyetola, representing the African Financial Institutions, described the visit as a preparatory mission to evaluate the state’s readiness for the groundbreaking project.

He expressed satisfaction with Enugu’s progress, noting the provision of requisite infrastructure such as over 1,000 hectares of land and access roads, crucial criteria for participation in the SAPZ program.

Assurances of support and collaboration poured in from local stakeholders, including Igwe Okeke Arum, the traditional ruler of Owo Community, who pledged additional land if needed.

Engr. Patrick Ubru, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro Industrialisation, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of eradicating hunger and poverty through initiatives like the SAPZ. With groundwork laid, Enugu State stands poised to embark on a transformative journey towards agricultural prosperity and economic empowerment.
