A fire broke out at Kaura Modern Market in Abuja late Friday night, destroying around 40 shops and causing significant losses. The blaze, which started at approximately 11 p.m., was attributed to an electrical spark from a power changeover installed in one of the shops, and was intensified by a generator kept inside. Items lost in the fire included foodstuffs, household goods, and electrical appliances.
The Acting Director of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service, Amiola Adebayo, confirmed the incident and reported that the fire was contained by 1:59 a.m., thanks to the efforts of the FCT and Federal Fire Service teams. Although there were no reports of casualties or injuries, the fire caused extensive damage to property.

Addressing claims that firefighters arrived late, Adebayo clarified that network issues delayed communication but assured that fire service teams reached the scene within 10 to 12 minutes after receiving the call.
He explained that the initial response came from the Games Village service, followed by the Asokoro unit about 15 minutes later. Despite the quick response, the fire had already caused significant damage by the time it was brought under control.
