On Thursday, the Abia State Government will launch a N1 billion Interest-Free Revolving Loan Scheme, benefiting 9,200 residents across 184 wards in the state during the first phase. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, following the executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti on Monday.
Kanu explained that 50 beneficiaries from each political ward will be selected to participate in this empowerment initiative. The scheme aims to support micro-businesses in the state, acting as both a palliative measure and a means of economic empowerment for the recipients.
“The governor will officially unveil the loan disbursement through the Abia State Co-operative and Support Schemes,” Kanu stated. “This initiative is designed to bolster micro-businesses operating within the state, providing much-needed support amidst the current economic downturn.”
He emphasized that the program’s impact will be substantial, positively influencing the state’s economy and alleviating the challenges faced by small business owners. The broad distribution of beneficiaries across all political wards ensures that the scheme’s benefits are felt statewide.
Kanu also expressed concern over the increasing incidents of vandalism targeting public schools and properties in the state, warning that the government will not tolerate such actions. He urged community leaders and stakeholders to take responsibility for protecting public schools within their communities.
