The Abia State Government has officially acquired full ownership of the long-abandoned Aba Mega Mall located in Osisioma Local Government Area, following the successful settlement of all outstanding financial obligations to former partners and stakeholders.

Governor Alex Otti made the announcement during an event held in Aba, describing the development as a significant step toward revitalising the multi-million-dollar complex and converting it into a world-class, multi-purpose industrial hub.

“Before now, there was a dispute over the ownership of the Aba Mega Mall. But about three weeks ago, we resolved it, paid off everybody that was being owed, and the place has reverted to the State Government,” Otti said.

He emphasized that the government’s approach to the takeover was entirely peaceful and based on dialogue and settlement.

“We didn’t want to use force. We called everyone involved—asked how much they were owed—and we paid all, even including their bankers,” he added.

The Aba Mega Mall, once envisioned as West Africa’s largest retail hub, had remained idle for years despite massive investments. The site had been embroiled in ownership disputes and financial challenges, hindering its potential impact on the local economy.

Greenfield Assets Praises Otti’s Leadership

Dr. Paul Obanua, Chairman of Greenfield Assets Limited, one of the key partners in the original development of the mall, commended Governor Otti for his decisive leadership and transparent negotiation process.

“This remarkable achievement was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Abia State’s pragmatic and forward-thinking Governor Otti, who expertly facilitated the resolution of the financial commitments between Greenfield Assets Limited (a subsidiary of Greenfield Group PLC) and their partner, First City Monument Bank (FCMB),” Obanua said.

He added that the full repayment of outstanding bank loans allowed Greenfield’s formal exit from the project and paved the way for a fresh start under government leadership.

A New Vision for the Mall

Governor Otti reiterated that the facility would no longer be left to decay. Instead, the government is set to repurpose the complex for industrial use, unlocking economic opportunities for the people of Abia State.

“We are committed to reviving this facility and ensuring it becomes an asset that drives industrial growth and job creation for our people,” Otti stated.

The revitalisation of the Aba Mega Mall forms part of Governor Otti’s broader economic agenda, focused on infrastructure renewal, private-sector collaboration, and sustainable development in the state.
