In a significant move to boost economic growth across the continent, a new initiative is providing young African entrepreneurs with $5,000 in seed capital.
This announcement came during the Future Investment Initiative New Africa Summit in Saudi Arabia, where Tony Elumelu, a prominent business leader and advocate for Africapitalism, discussed the transformative potential of entrepreneurship in addressing Africa’s pressing challenges, such as high unemployment and inadequate infrastructure.
Elumelu, associated with Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation, emphasized the initiative’s dual focus on financial support and mentorship.
“By empowering young entrepreneurs with not only capital but also business training, we aim to create thriving enterprises that can contribute significantly to job creation and economic development,” he stated. To date, this approach has already supported 20,000 young entrepreneurs, generating approximately 400,000 direct and indirect jobs.

However, Elumelu cautioned that access to funding is just one piece of the puzzle. “For true economic progress, we need to tackle systemic issues like electricity access, taxation reforms, and policy frameworks that support entrepreneurial success,” he asserted. He called for strategic public-private partnerships to establish a supportive ecosystem for businesses.
Elumelu also acknowledged the role of platforms like the Future Investment Initiative in amplifying Africa’s voice on the global stage. “Africa is brimming with potential. With the right investments and policies, we can turn our challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth,” he concluded, reinforcing the belief that the continent’s future hinges on nurturing its entrepreneurial spirit.
